Dance at the College
Dance at Manor College has become a separate element in the Performing Arts Department and is growing each year. Although not a specific subject Dance is a part of the BTEC Performing Arts course and the college has various extra curricular activities for students to take part in some dance workshops.
We have had regular visits from Professional Dance Practitioners and choreographers who have taken our students through intensive workshops to enhance their training and skills as well as excursions to see professional works on stage.
Dance has also become a major part of the college productions as the amount of talented children has grown in recent years, something we expect to continue in the future.
Recent information:
- 2009 has seen the development of a Gifted and Talented Elite group called Manor Dance which consists of 25 of the college most gifted dancers. It is designed to develop their skills and talent and give them specialist training to be able to hopefully pursue a career in Dance.
- The group have already taken part in a number of workshops with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Dance City, Tees Valley Dance and worked with two professional West End dancers in workshops and master classes.
- The group will feature in many of the College productions and will also have the opportunity to study an extra GCSE in Dance in the future.
- Year 11 pupil Ryan Wilson now runs his own Hip Hop/ Street Dance class who teaches the lower school the basic street dancing skills in an extra curricular class.
- Callum Rayment Y8 has become Double National Champion in Ballroom sequence and Old Time dance at Blackpool Winter Gardens 2009. This is the second time he has won this title and we hope it won’t be the last.
- Hannah Marram Y9 has won a number of championships over the last year; some of her titles include British Modern Champion, British Ballet Champion, England Tap Champion, North East and Cleveland Tap champion. She is clearly a huge talent who will undoubtedly be an extremely successful dancer in the future.
Future events:
- Extra curricular dance lessons will be starting in January 2010 to develop the skills of all dancers of any ability which will be free to students.
- The college will stage a variety show in July 2010 in which Dance will be a major feature and feature dancers of all abilities as well as the Manor Dance group.
- Extra curricular trips to see professional dance works such as Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake at Newcastle Theatre Royal.
- GCSE Dance offered to Y9 GAT children as an extra subject to raise achievement.
