College Curriculum

Manor College is a Specialist Technology College and the curriculum reflects our specialist status with a distinct emphasis on Maths, Science, Technology and ICT. All students study English, Maths, Science and Technology.

The vast majority of students will study two GCSEs in Science and a smaller number will study Triple Award Science. Students choose a Technology option at the end of Year 8 and have a three year GCSE course. ICT is taken by all students in Years 7, 8 and 9 and they have the chance to continue ICT in Years 10 and 11.

PE, RE and PSHE [Personal, Social and Health Education] are also taken by all students. PSHE is taught by form tutors and covers three elements. Ready4Work covers careers education, work related learning and financial capability. Ready4Life covers issues relating to health and personal wellbeing. Ready4Society covers Citizenship.

All students in Years 7 – 9 study our core subjects but in addition they have Art, Drama, Geography, History, Music and a Modern Foreign Language. The main lead languages are French and German but some students will also have the opportunity to study Spanish.

The timetable consists of thirty lessons per week – each lesson lasting fifty minutes. We have three pathways or curriculum models throughout the College. By allocating students to pathways we feel that we can better meet their particular needs and provide them with the courses which will help them to achieve and progress at 16 to full time education or training.

The Brunel Pathway caters for students who are expected to achieve A* – C GCSE grades and who have the potential to continue into Higher Education. All Brunel students will study a Modern Foreign Language for 5 years. These students may be fast tracked and early entered for some GCSE subjects.

The Hawking Pathway caters for the majority of students in the year group and it is very similar to the Brunel curriculum except that there are fewer cases of students being fast tracked and early entered for their GCSEs.

Many students in this pathway will achieve high grades at GCSE. All Brunel and Hawking students have their English, Maths and Science lessons at the same time which gives us the opportunity to set students according to their ability and needs.

The Pascal Pathway provides a curriculum designed to meet the needs of small groups of students who need more support. These students will study the core subjects but 10 of their lessons in Years 7 – 9 will be an integrated Humanities course which is based on literacy and numeracy skills.

In Year 10 and 11 students can choose up to 4 options from a range of subjects and qualifications. We offer a range of GCSEs including Art, Drama, French, Geography, German, Health and Social Care, History, Humanities, ICT, Media, Music, PE and RE.

We also offer NVQs in German and Spanish and BTEC First Diplomas in Performing Arts, Sport and Business. From 2010 we are also offering new courses in I Media and Enterprise.
