Mathematics Department
The Mathematics Team aims for excellence in Mathematics so that all students, irrespective of gender, ability or physical condition, enjoy mathematics and thereby achieve their potential in external examinations and have the mathematical competence to make sense of and contribute to the world beyond Manor College of Technology.
All mathematics staff use a range of teaching and learning styles to ensure that the needs of all students are met.
All students will be given the knowledge, skills and understanding to apply their maths skills to situations that might arise in their own lives.
Key Stage 3
Students are placed in sets at the start of Year 7 depending on their ability. Throughout Key Stage 3 these sets are regularly reviewed.
Key Stage 4
All students will be entered for a GCSE examination with the Edexcel examination board. Tier of entry and exam specification are dependent on the set a student is in. If you require further information please contact your child’s Maths teacher. There is no coursework for GCSE Mathematics.
Other Qualifications
Students may be entered for other qualifications for a variety of reasons. The Mathematics Department currently allows entry for GCSE Statistics, Adult Numeracy, Functional Skills, Entry Level and Free Standing Maths Qualification.
For most of these qualifications the preparation takes place during normal Maths lessons, however some will require attending extra lessons outside of the normal school day. GCSE Statistics requires one piece of coursework.
Progression Routes
GCSE Maths is widely recognised as a qualification that proves to employers you have a good understanding of numeracy. Many employers and most universities will require a GCSE in Mathematics usually grades A* - C. Students who do not achieve a grade C may have the opportunity to re-sit the course at their FE/HE provider. To study Mathematics at A Level you will be required to have a minimum of grade B at GCSE.
The range of jobs which use Mathematics is immense, it’s not just teaching. Jobs range from working in the travel industry, software engineer, business management, sports scientist, accountant, solicitor and hairdresser.
