Science Department
The Science Department is spread over 3 floors with specialist science laboratories catering for practical science activities. It also has a dedicated ICT suite which is used for many activities including research for coursework, on-line revision, wikis, blogs and on-line assessments.
All Science teaching rooms have projection and network connections to support and enhance the learning experiences of our students.
Curriculum
Students follow the Go-Science scheme of work during Y7, Y8 and Y9. All students are given a CD of the work they will cover during these years to further support their learning off-site. APP (Assessing Pupil Progress) is being introduced in Y7 this year and will be developed for Y8 and Y9 over the next 2 years.
Students who are at a Level 6 or above in Y9 (January) are offered the opportunity to study Triple Award Science. The first cohort of students following this accelerated route are currently going through Y10 and the initial analysis is very encouraging.
In Y10 the students follow Gateway Science (Core) at either Higher or Foundation Tier. Pascal students cover this course over 2 years and study Entry Level Science over 2 years simultaneously.
In Y11 the students are offered to study either:
- Gateway Additional Science (Higher)
- TwentyFirstCenturyScience (Higher/Foundation)
Examination Success
Since 2006 the Science examination results have risen yearly to record levels in 2009:
Y10 – 63.7% of students achieving A* - C
Y11 – 77.8% of students achieving A* - C
19.0% of our students achieved an A*/A grade in Y11 2009
