Geography Department
The primary concern of the department is to facilitate students to achieve their full potential by stimulating and fostering an interest in geography throughout Key Stages 3 and 4.
The geography department examines a variety of interesting and contemporary topics to help students to make sense of their surroundings and the wider world. Our approach develops academic knowledge and helps students to gain a sense of ‘citizenship’.
The department is committed to making geography a reflective and enjoyable learning experience. Emphasis is placed on structured analysis which encourages students to be active in the learning process by asking and exploring. As the department considers the creative use of ICT to be crucial in this regard, students will be exposed to a wide range of resources and techniques.
KS3
Students receive one geography lesson per week at Key Stage 3. The content of the lower school curriculum is controlled by the two main elements of the National Curriculum i.e. the KS3 Programme of Study and the Attainment Target.
The programme of study for KS3 follows the pattern shown in the table below.
KS4
Currently, the department offers AQA Specimen A GCSE Geography to Key Stage 4 students. Assessment consists of a local fieldwork investigation (25%) and two final written examinations (75%) at the end of Year 11. The local fieldwork investigation is a controlled assessment.
The programme of study for KS4 follows the pattern shown in the table below.
GCSE Controlled Assessment
The production of a good controlled assessment report will help ensure that a pupil achieves her/his potential at GCSE. Controlled assessment lessons have been built into the scheme of work and most homework from June of Year 10 onward is devoted to the production of the report. Controlled assessment topics change annually.
The report to be undertaken in 2011 will examine the effects that a theme park has on a locality.
