Writing
‘The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say.’
Anaïs Nin
Like reading, a Manor student cannot achieve success without being to effectively communicate themselves in a written format. In all subject areas at Key Stage Four, students are expected to be able to write and express their ideas in an understandable written manner.
Please find below the different areas that students’ writing is assessed on:
AF1 Being able to create imaginative, interesting and thoughtful texts: including relevant ideas being developed.
AF2 Being able to produce texts which are appropriate to purpose, audience and format: writing should have a clear purpose and should use writing styles appropriate to task and audience.
AF3 & 4 Being able to organise writing and to construct clear and cohesive paragraphs.
AF5 Being able to vary sentence structure for effect.
AF6 Being able to use accurate punctuation and syntax.
AF7 Being able to select appropriate and effective vocabulary.
AF8 Use correct spelling.
Top tips for top writers:
• Provide your child with weekly spelling tests – there are a wide range of online spelling tests that can be used.
• Discourage your child to use ‘text speak’ and to write in full sentences, with capital letters and full stops.
• Encourage your child to practice their writing skills at home and when completing homework for all subjects to use: full sentences, paragraphs, punctuation and correct spelling.
• Encourage your child to use a dictionary to check spelling and the meaning of new vocabulary. There are on line dictionaries as well as APP dictionaries you can download onto your iPhone or Blackberry.
