Key Stage 4

GCSE

Paper 1: Unit 1.

Social Class

In Y10 pupils look at the topic of Social Class, looking at the issues it created in the past and present. Stimuli used include extracts from My Fair Lady, cartoons, accents and dialects.  Students complete a similar amount of work to that of the real unit and it allows them to understand the depth of work needed to gain a passing grade at GCSE level.

Prejudice.

For the actual exam students look at the issues surrounding various types of prejudice including bullying, racism, sexism and homophobia.  Pupils are marked by their teacher over a period of 6 hours whilst completing coursework based around each lesson.

Coursework includes a spider diagram, writing a monologue, a bully and victim role on the wall diagram, and a review of a critical friend.

Paper 1: Unit 2.

Blood Brothers

Pupils explore the full text of Blood Brothers by Willy Russell as a practice exam in Y10.  Students use improvisation, hot seating, and other techniques as well as reading from the text directly to inform their understanding of the play.

Two

This play by Jim Cartwright is used as the exam text in Y11.  Students explore the full text and look at various aspects of the play. They study the characters and how their place within the structure of the play, the text through learning monologues, and directing scenes and through improvisation.

One of the pupil’s favourite sections is creating a pub scene with all the characters on stage at once and seeing how they interact.
