Music

Music at the College

The music department consists of 2 large teaching rooms and 2 small practice rooms. Both teaching rooms are fully equipped with 15 full size keyboards, a full set of tuned percussion, recorders, a large selection of percussion instruments and a clavinova. All classes have access to both rooms and work on a rota basis to ensure equality. The equipment enables us to provide live solo and ensemble work, both vocally and on instruments, but also computerised music through the use of a variety of music software such as Sibelius and Dance Ejay.

The practice rooms both have acoustic pianos and one has a drum kit. These are used for peripatetic lessons and for rehearsals at break, lunch and after school for small ensembles.

A 3rd teaching room, adjoining the practice rooms is in use for a few music lessons, when three lessons are timetabled at the same time. This room is used for theory work and listening tasks. Music at KS3 is taught in mixed ability classes, all groups have one lesson per week, with the exception of year 9 Pascal groups who have two per week. In lessons students are involved in various performing, composing and listening activities. They work on their own and in small group situations and are all encouraged to take part in extra curricular activities.

Students are regularly given the opportunity to perform in concerts. The choir have sung in churches and at care homes. We had a Christmas concert and a candle light carol concert in December. This term we have our first ever talent competition and future performances include our year 11 leavers concert and our summer concert.
