A Vampire Story
March 2008
This play was performed at Manor in March 2008 and then again at Newcastle Theatre Royal in May 2008. It was part of the National Theatre’s New Connections programme and was a complex play involving characters living in the 18th century as well as the 21st century. We produced the play using many Brechtian techniques including the chorus remaining on stage throughout the play.
The basic plot involved two sisters, Claire & Ella, who move on to yet another small town. They seem to have chosen their names and are they sisters? Claire, takes a job in a pub. Ella, goes to school—again!
During an exercise in drama class, Ella or is it Eleanor confesses that she has been alive for over two hundred years and has survived by drinking human blood. Mint, her teacher, thinks she is being over dramatic!
Eleanor starts to write her life story as a play for her coursework. She describes Claire’s background as a prostitute in 19th century London and her own as a child in a private orphanage.
Meanwhile, things are falling apart. People who know Ella and meet Claire are disappearing. Is Ella telling the truth? Are Eleanor and Claire vampires? Or are they just confused?
