A Year and a Day

March 2007

A Year and A Day was a complex play from the National Theatre New Connections programme.

The play was performed at Manor College in March and then again in May at Newcastle Theatre Royal.

The plot was explained by a storyteller (Regan English) and her Kritter (Ross Crump) to a girl (Lauren Spoors). In a land far away there was a garden and in it lived three kritters – a Land Kritter (Graeme Willetts), Tree Kritter (Jennifer Rowntree) and a Water Kritter (Sarah Bell).

The set was described in detail in the play and we needed a river, with a pool at the bottom of it, trees and an obvious Crimson and Silver side, either side of the river.

We chose to create an imposing set and Mr Gill created absolutely amazing 10 foot tall silver metal trees complete with branches. Three long curtains were hung on stage – one crimson, one silver and one white gauze where the musician and singer could disappear behind.

Luke Wallace and James Slimings also designed the lighting, making use of floor cans to ‘uplight’ the curtains, light the river and create the atmosphere needed within the play.

Costume played a large role in the production and Mrs Robinson (a retired member of staff) created fantastic cloaks for the Pontificators and acolytes and cast members created their own version of the tabards needed by their tribe, whether crimson or silver.

The Tree, Land and Water kritters created their own costumes with amazing masks and painted leotards with feathers and material added to them for the tree and water kritter.

The production was transferred to Newcastle Theatre Royal and dedicated to the memory of Kyle McManus who played the Silver Acolyte in the production at Manor.

Kyle died on April 16th 2007 between the productions of the two shows.

His design for the costumes of the Pontificator was printed on our T shirts for this show so we took a part of him with us to Newcastle for the weekend.
