The Things She Sees
March 2009
The Things She Sees was performed at Manor College in March 2009 and again at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in April 2009 as part of the NT New Connections programme.
Dizzy (Katie McLaren) has her nickname because she has dizzy spells and it looks like she is having an epileptic fit. She can draw the future but nobody realises this until Tad (Craig Walls) sees her drawings after art class. Her father has gone missing and it all links together with his family’s past in Morocco.
Another production using Brecht’s techniques, the company play an incredibly important role as they set the scene in London, in Marrakech, as market traders, as soldiers, as school children and as villagers. Lead characters become part of the chorus and costumes are minimal with basic black being added to with jewellery, jackets and scarves.
By the time we performed at Scarborough, Craig, who played Tad had broken his leg by falling off his BMX whilst performing tricks. This meant we really needed two wheelchairs for our trip with one of our cast (Luke Kennedy) already using his motorised wheelchair on stage, leaving his manual chair for the trip down the hill to the beach.
The day in Scarborough commenced with gathering at Manor at 7am for the trip to the coast. We had a call time in the theatre and needed to bring set, costumes, music and technical equipment with us ready to give to the theatre staff.
We managed to all get there and into the theatre without any problem and the cast had a tour around the theatre and backstage area whilst the technical team did the get in. We had a tech run and then a dress run in the space, altering staging as we went to make sure that the show transferred easily from our stage to the Stephen Joseph theatre stage.
After finishing our rehearsal we were free for the rest of the day until the other performance which was taking place prior to ours. The first priority was to feed the cast and what better to eat in Scarborough but fish and chips on the seafront. We therefore had to get all the way down the hill to the sea and we seemed to find the steepest possible route to take a wheelchair down.
Luke was practically lying down in his chair to make sure that he didn’t get tipped out but we reached the seafront without incident. The afternoon was spent building sandcastles on the beach. Mr Gill adjudicated and Team Smith won the honours. We made our way back to the theatre and watched another group from Nottingham perform brilliantly.
Then it was Manor’s turn. The performance went extremely well and the audience really appreciated our performances. The day ended with a party for both casts with pizza provided. Facebook details were swopped before we left to make our way back to Hartlepool arriving at 12.30 making it an extremely long but rewarding day.
