The Young Americans
February 2011
During February half term the Young Americans are visiting Manor College of Technology to run a series of workshops in the Performing Arts. They will spend three days working with up to 200 hundred children and young people to create a performance on Saturday 26th February.
The Young Americans are a group of young people aged between 15 and 22 who are semi-professional actors and singers who tour the UK, Europe and Japan to work with students to create performances involving singing, dancing and acting.
The group recently performed at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and can be seen performing on Youtube.

The cost of the three day workshop is £50 and is by all accounts, an amazing experience and one the students will never forget.
The dates for the workshop are Thursday 24th February to Saturday 26th February 2011 and rehearsals will last all day at Manor College.
Places on the course are available to all Manor pupils, our primary partners and the two sixth forms. If Manor students would like to take part they need to collect a letter from Miss Hopwood, Curriculum Director of Performing Arts.
We Need Your Help
One key element of the event is the ‘Homestay’. We need to accommodate a cast and crew of 45 with at least two Young Americans in each home. The homestay is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop the friendships made during the workshops. If you are willing to take part you would be committing yourself to the following:
- Providing accommodation for at least 2 members of the cast/crew from 23rd February through to Saturday 26th February.
- Providing a breakfast and packed lunch for your homestays.
- Ensuring that the homestays are delivered and collected from Manor from Thursday to Saturday.
By agreeing to do this you will receive two complementary tickets for the workshop conclusion – a fantastic two hour show on the Saturday evening. In addition, the workshop the cost will be reduced to £39 per child.
If a homestay is out of the question you can still help by providing some food for the event. This can be as simple as cooking a pot of chilli or something similar that can be brought in for one of the days. This ‘pot luck’ dinner will be served at 6pm on each day to the cast and crew ensuring that they receive a hot meal during their stay.
This idea has worked well during previous tours where multiple volunteers simply provide one or two dishes each (the FMC will be available to organise the meal, clearing away and return of pots and pans).
Once again if you think you can help please contact Paul Moffat, Assistant Headteacher on 01429 288338 or email pmoffat@manorcollege.org.uk for further details.
Please contribute to this event if you can to ensure that it is successful – this is the first time the Young Americans have come to a Hartlepool school, it is a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn from students from another culture.
