BBC News - School Report

17th March 2010

BBC News School Report gives 11-14 year-old pupils an opportunity to make their own news reports for a real audience.

Using lesson plans and materials from the BBC website, and with the support from BBC staff, teachers helped pupils develop journalistic skills in order to hopefully become School Reporters.

Manor college had six pupils involved in the creation of their BBC News School Report.

The students involved chose their own news story: ‘The effects of global warming on the local scale’ (specifically, the decline in numbers of certain bird species).

Despite being extremely busy with other projects (let alone day to day school work!) all six students researched, interviewed, scripted and edited their report entirely in their own time.

The experience raised the confidence, team building and motivation of the students.

The main benefits were working as a group, challenging pupils to work to a deadline (a skill needed not just for GCSE but in life), enthusiasm for producing their own stories - what matters to them, awareness of the news process – students have reported that they take more notice of the news since the project.

Some quotes from pupils about the project..

It was very insightful in the workings of the BBC". – Kate, Y9

"It was really exciting and I enjoyed myself. It was a really fascinating experience!" – Emma, Y9

Once we got into it was really interesting – the technical aspects were fascinating.” Lily-May, Y9

I enjoyed using the equipment, especially the greenscreen.” Eleanor, Y9
