Hartlepool has been named as having the most improved GCSE results in the country.

Goverment officials released the figures yesterday that have been hailed as "remarkable" by council chiefs and "tremendous" by school bosses.The statistics show that Hartlepool, joint with Hakney in London, is the most improved local authority for pupils gaining five GCSE grades A* to C, including English and Mathematics, between 2008 and 2009.

Councilor Cath Hill, Hartlepool Borough Council's cabinet member for childrens servcies, said "it is a truley remarkable achievement to be the joint most-improved local authority in the country".

This summers results showed 48.7 percent of pupils in the town's six secondary schools achieved the benchmark figure, which is 8.8 percentage points up on the previous year.

Manor College of Technology, showed the best improvement in the town with an 18 percent hike in the number of students attaing the target, rising from 35 percent to 53 percent.

Headteacher Alan White said: "There was success right across the curriculum and the record five plus A* to C, including English and Mathematics, reflects the great relationships which exist between staff and children.

"Audiences at last week's presentation evenings witnessed this special relationship and saw more than 1,000 children receiving awards."
