Rock for Life
26th May 2010
This year’s annual Rock Concert at Manor had a distinctly Pink flavour. In memory of our dearly loved and much missed, Mrs Tate, performers and audience wore pink, and the whole event was dedicated to raising money for Breast Cancer charity.
Making full use of our close links with Red Dreams, a team of professional sound engineers was brought in, along with a 1000 Watt PA rig, to ensure that the concert would sound as good as it looked. From the first note, Man Down, fronted by Jacob Reid and Rachael Flounders, set the tone for an evening of exciting and energetic music.
Barred from the Barbers brought a great sense of fun to the show, led by Paul Gilfoyle, a very engaging front man, the band had the audience on their feet.
Slow Epidemic continued the high quality of performance, with Scott Fletcher Dobson and Casey Smith very much to the fore. By now, those who have seen these events run for many years, were commenting that this was among the best line-ups we had seen.
The staff were magnificently represented by the mighty Ziggy Hindhaugh, who played a magnificent solo tribute to his hero, David Bowie, before being joined by wrinkly rockers, Cut the Mustard.
The old timers went on to introduce an array of special guest performers, which would be among the highlights of this and any other Rock Night: Amber Reeve’s sensational saxophone, paired with some fabulous James Pattison guitar work on Baker Street; Kayleigh Johnson singing two sixties classics (special requests from Mr White), and Casey Smith, duetting on Bryan Adams & Mel C’s Baby When You’re Gone.
Audience participation reached new levels, as staff and students got to their feet for Sex on Fire, before We Are The People delivered a memorable, blistering, closing set, which sent the crowd home in fine spirits. Led by our own Lewis Jones and Liam Rutherford, these boys have been gigging around town for a little while now, and like Barred From the Barbers and Casey Smith, they are working with Red Dreams, on building a fine reputation.
All in all, this was a very impressive and enjoyable evening, in a very good cause. My thanks to all the brilliant performers, and to all those who supported us, especially Mrs Munro, Mrs Youdale and Mrs Pattison.
