Durham County Cup Final (Under 15/Year 10)
5th May 2010
| Easington 1 - 3 Manor College of Technology |
Played at Hartlepool United's Victoria Park.
Manor College of Technology Year 10s won their 3rd trophy of a magnificent season in a tremendous game played at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Park. After already lifting the Hartlepool Town Cup and the Cleveland County Cup the Manor players had a chance to create History and they did not disappoint..
Facing a physically strong Easington team, it was very important Manor played their usual free flowing passing game and they did not disappoint.
Play in the early stages was even with both sides enjoying possession. Manor then started to take a hold of the game a superb through ball from Town Cup Final Goal Hero Connor Watson set Striker Scott Whitmore clear.
Showing pace and skill Whitmore took on two defenders before sending the ball across the Easington goal. Despite valiant attempts from the Easington defenders Conall Sweeting was on hand to bundle the ball across the line to give Manor the lead.
Easington tried to rally however found Manor had really got into their stride. Manors back four of Jassem Sukur, Jake Fergusson, Ryan Boddy and Ross Kidson were solid as a rock at the back. Fergusson did need to leave the field after a heavy challenge and the ever reliable Cameron Ingledew deputised superbly.
The Midfield of Ben Wignall, Neil Fannan, Connor Watson and Ryan Wilson were keeping possession and beginning to dominate the game. Captain Wignall’s class told just when he picked up the ball just inside the oppositions half and drove at the Easington defence.
The defenders had no answer to Wignalls speed and control as he weaved past them and place a fine left foot strike past the helpless keeper and into the corner of the net.
Easington then had a good ten minute spell just before the interval. They hit a post from a free kick, and Manors brilliant goalkeeper Adam Meredith was called into action when making two fantastic reaction saves. Despite this short period of pressure Manor held firm and held a 2 goal cushion at the break.
The Second half began well for Manor who retook control of the game. A stinging 30 yard effort from the very impressive Ryan Wilson hit the bar and Sweeting and Whitmore were causing the Easington defence all sorts of problems.
Then Manor started to encounter problems as legs started to tire. Sweeting had to be withdrawn due to an injury and Wignall was suffering with cramp. Easington then pulled a goal back when they made their height tell from a set piece and a well struck shot ended up in the back of the Manor net.
Easington then had two great chances, one was glanced wide of the goal, and the second produced a save from Meredith that wouldn’t have look out of place in the Football League.
Haiden Donelly and Liam Bailey were introduced and both hade an immediate impact on the game. Donnellys hold up play and Bailey’s positive running at defenders was most impressive. After suffering the disappointment of conceding it would have been easy for Manor to lie down, but this is a side full of character and determination.
Manor took the initiative and soon regained their two goal lead when the tireless Neil Fannan stuck a sweet half volley into the corner of the net from just outside the box. Fannan then duly produced a spider man mask from his sock to celebrate much to the amusement of the crowd.
At 3-1 it was now a case of seeing out the tie for the Manor players. Fergusson was reintroduced, and Rob Spence and Lloyd Tindall who have played their part in a fantastic season were also involved.
The final whistle arrived and Manor was overjoyed to pick up their 3rd trophy of what has been a truly memorable season. The boys have worked tremendously hard and fully deserve to add the Durham County Cup to their list of Honours.
