Review of Grease
7th - 10th December 2009
‘Grease’ was truly ‘the word’ at Manor College from December 7th to 10th 2009. 85 students had been rehearsing since September and now was the time to show their friends and family just what had been taking place in all those rehearsals in the Drama Studio each week.
The week began with a Sunday morning band call. Whilst the musicians were rehearsing the T Bird’s came in for their haircuts. The boys had all agreed to get their hair cut ready for the quiffs needed and they all arrived for their appointment with Danny Zucko’s mum!
Then came the Sunday afternoon dress rehearsal, the first time the cast rehearsed with the band, wireless mics and lighting so it was also the technical run too. Everything went well and Mr Gill’s fantastic double sided car fitted beautifully on the stage for ‘Greased Lightnin’, and the drive in movie scene.
Monday morning dawned and the cast arrived at College ready for their first performance and final dress rehearsal. At 9.15 over 300 Y6 pupils from our partner primary school’s arrived with their teachers to watch the production. They seemed to enjoy the show and the performance went well.
Next year some of this audience would be in the cast so we’re glad they enjoyed it. The afternoon was spent rehearsing small sections and resetting the bows. The Hartlepool Mail came to take photos ready for the article they were producing that week.
So finally it was 6pm, the cast arrived and show week began. They got dressed into their first costume and did hair and make up ready for the leads to be mic-ed up and then gathered together for the ‘pep talk’ and warm up from the Performing Arts staff.
Students who hadn’t been in a production before soon learnt the old warm ups of Hey You and Ooh loo la lay and Melissa (who plays Sandy) introduced them to the Little Green Frog song from last year’s NT Connections Festival. The energy was up, the focus was there and suddenly it was 6.55pm and it was time for the cast to take their places for the opening number.
The singing, dancing and acting each night surpassed the previous one and even problems with technical equipment couldn’t dampen the spirits and energy of each member of the cast. Four sell out performances to fantastic audiences led to a final evening standing ovation. The whole show was certainly one of the best ever produced at Manor College and the individual performances of each and every lead character were fantastic.
The Performing Arts staff are always very proud of the students and how hard they work but this show was a joy to produce and we look forward to working with many of the cast again for the variety show in July.
